Zabu Means Delicious Spicy Chicken
Korean Town (Lower Robson)
Could Be Addictive
We don’t really know what Zabu means, or if it means anything in Korean, but to us it means delicious spicy chicken. When I say spicy I mean really hot. Our editor Candidus Maximus got addicted to it. He says he would’ve moved his centurions to Korea for a taste except they didn’t know Korea existed at that time. It goes great with cold beer or cold white or rose wine to cool your tongue. Zabu is located right across from Robson market. This area deserves to be called Korean Town since it’s home to at least a dozen Korean eateries. The restaurant features all kinds of delicious chicken dishes, not necessarily spicy, but our favorite is definitely the “hot sticks”, meaning hot drumsticks since they make you say ahh in front of a ventilator. They have a good selection of soups and other delicious Korean dishes as well. The restaurant accommodates an estimated 40 people at a time and attracts lineups after 6PM and on weekends. They serve draft and bottled beer as well as sake.
Highly recommended.

Best Bite Donair
Davie & Thurlow
It’s As Good As It Gets
Aside from the big guns that captured Constantinople, Donair is probably the best-known Turkish invention. The original word is “Doner”, which means (it) revolves, referring to the revolving spit that roasts the meat. Greeks introduced it to the world as “Gyro”, meaning the same, remember gyroscope? But the real champions of donair are without doubt the Lebanese. Actually, the Arabic word is “shawarma”, but Lebanese restaurateurs seem to have a preference for the original word “donair.” This is especially the case in Vancouver, which brings us to “Best Bite Donair” on Davie at the corner of Thurlow. According to our famous connoisseur of gourmet fast food Candidus Maximus, Best Bite Donair is as good as it gets in Vancouver. Best Bite specializes in chicken donair, marinated fresh with an ancient Lebanese recipe.
You can have this chicken delicacy on a plate with rice and your choice of vegetable and dips. By the way, this is probably the best-tasting rice we have found at a fast-food eatery. The humus is great, and babaghanoush made from eggplants is out of this world. We recommend banana peppers or jalapenos to make it slightly spicy. Imad, the owner also has a unique homemade chutney that isn’t like anything we tasted before, but you have to ask for it.
Vancouver’s Super Chicken Sandwich
The other choice is a pita sandwich, which you might call the super sandwich. It’s chicken donair with your choice of vegetables and dips, which you may want to top with Imad’s tsatsiki or hot sauce. Pita donair sandwich with vegetables has become very popular in Vancouver the past ten years, but Imad’s pita donair deserves to be called the Super Chicken Sandwich of Vancouver.
Imad Farhat, originally from Beirut, has 27 years of experience in this business. He’s one of the hardest-working people we have ever seen. Although this is a fast-food eatery it could be called a restaurant since Imad has provided tables and seating for over 20 customers so you can eat your food comfortably on the premises. You could even order a beer, since the eatery is licensed for beer.
Best Bite Donair at Davie and Thurlow. Highly recommended.
